Beer with a benefit: 26 Asheville breweries, bars, restaurants raise money for Ukraine

Starting Wednesday, March 9, all proceeds from the Shadowclock Pilsner at Forestry Camp Taproom + Kitchen will benefit those hit hardest by the war in Ukraine.

“It is one of our more popular beers, and so we wanted to ensure that the drink that we chose was going to have as much impact on the fundraising efforts as possible,” Burial Beer Co. CEO and co-founder Jess Reiser said.

Burial Beer Co. is one of 26 Asheville-based breweries, bars and restaurants taking part in the Benevolent Spirits fundraiser. The initiative was started by chef and restaurant owner Katie Button.

“It’s a great way, an easy way for restaurants, breweries, bars to activate our community to help fund causes in need,” Button said.

During the last Benevolent Spirits fundraiser, $17,000 was raised for Tropical Storm Fred relief. This time, they’re aiming for more and will donate all of it World Central Kitchen, an organization that provides food for victims of disasters and humanitarian crises.

“They are currently over at eight border crossing locations in Ukraine feeding people,” Button said. “World Central Kitchen believes that access to food is a universal human right. So they are there at these border crossings, feeding people who are families fleeing Ukraine and also families who are staying in Ukraine.”

Button said the fundraiser is simple: participating businesses pick a beverage and donate sale proceeds from March 9-15. It’s one way for locals to tap in and provide some much-needed relief.

“It can be so easy to, like, feel removed from it in our little corner of the mountains,” Reiser said. “To really like feel like you are connected to a cause that is benefiting people who live clear across the world from you is really impactful.”
